There was something quite unique about Mengqi He’s ways of perceiving religion and spiritual experience and we wanted to give the artist the opportunity to talk about her work in our Exhibition "Codes Of Faith".
Mengqi He took her inspiration from Heart Sutra, the Buddhist wisdom about life and death. It explored ways to approach satisfaction, as well as ways to relieve the pains of daily life. The lightness and the connection between religion and religious texts are key areas of interest which she looks to explore. From her work in Laura’s gallery, we could read her ways of understanding religion: human lives are meaningless, the emptiness inside our bodies are like a toy with strings around joints; once the strings are cut, bodies would naturally fall apart. The weight of air inside balloons represents human bodies, which die out quick; writings are like our individual souls. Once our bodies decayed, souls will eventually be released back into the ground - just like the poem she repeatedly wrote in Chinese calligraphy. Existence of humans: Human and animal presence is positive, interactive, and manipulative, unlike objects made from nature, which are still and innocent. However, humans, like other objects, can be manipulated through the environment, nature and thoughts. Humans are just like toys with strings, dancing around tables. But somehow, religion is also part of human existence, and without human existence, we would not know if religion would ever exist.
